Covid-19 Now Covered Under Ayushman Bharat Scheme; Treatment free for Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries
Testing and treatment for COVID-19 will be free of cost for Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries at private laboratories and empanelled hospitals, the National Health Authority (NHA) said on Saturday.
The NHA, which implements the national health insurance scheme, said this will strengthen the country’s response to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
“Testing and treatment of COVID-19 is already available for free in public facilities. Now, more than 50 crore citizens, eligible under the
health assurance scheme will be able to avail free testing through private labs and treatment for COVID-19 in empanelled hospitals,” it said in a statement.
The statement further said that the empanelled hospitals can use their own authorised testing facilities or tie-up with an authorized testing facility. These tests would be carried out as per the protocol set by Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and by private labs approved/registered by ICMR. Similarly, treatment of COVID-19 by private hospitals will be covered under AB-PMJAY.
“More than 50 crore poor and vulnerable citizens shall henceforth be eligible for free COVID-19 testing and treatment under Ayushman Bharat, PMJAY. Testing at private labs and treatment in designated hospitals now made free for Ayushman beneficiaries across India,” Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan tweeted.
Health experts say social distancing and extensive testing are the two most potent weapons in the fight against the highly contagious virus, which has infected over a million people across the world. While the centre is strictly enforcing the nationwide lockdown to stem the spread of the virus, India has one of the lowest testing rates among the affected nations.
To bolster coronavirus testing numbers, the centre has recruited several private labs. However, there were concerns that poor people will not be able to afford private labs as the cost per test is steep.
“Active private sector involvement will be critical in case there is a surge in the number of COVID-19 patient that need care. States are in the process of enlisting private sector hospitals that can be converted to COVID-19 ONLY hospitals,” the NHA added.

ഇന്ത്യൻ കൗൺസിൽ ഓഫ് മെഡിക്കൽ റിസർച്ചിന്റെ (ഐ.സി.എം.ആർ.) മാനദണ്ഡം അനുസരിച്ചാവണം പരിശോധന. സ്വകാര്യ ലാബുകൾക്ക് ഐ.സി.എം.ആറിന്റെ അംഗീകാരമുണ്ടാവണം. ഇത്തരമൊരു പ്രതിസന്ധിഘട്ടം തരണംചെയ്യാൻ സ്വകാര്യമേഖലയെയും ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിന്റെ ഭാഗമായാണ് കോവിഡ് രോഗനിർണയവും ചികിത്സയും ആയുഷ്മാൻ ഭാരതിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയതെന്ന് ആരോഗ്യമന്ത്രി ഡോ. ഹർഷവർധൻ പറഞ്ഞു. പാവപ്പെട്ടവർക്കുണ്ടാകുന്ന ദുരിതം ഇതുവഴി ലഘൂകരിക്കാനാവുമെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു. കോവിഡ് ചികിത്സയിൽ പങ്കാളികളാവാൻ ഇതോടെ കൂടുതൽ ആശുപത്രികൾ രംഗത്തുവരുമെന്നാണ് സർക്കാരിന്റെ പ്രതീക്ഷ.
